FEZANA participation in the Commission on the Status of Women

The Commission on the Status of Women
- 51st Session from 26 February to 9 March 2007.

"Lasting peace cannot be achieved unless large population groups find ways in which to break out of poverty. Micro credit is one such means." -- Citation by Norwegian Nobel Committee, in awarding the Nobel Peace Prize for 2006 to Muhammad Yunus, an economist from Bangladesh, founder of the Grameen Bank.[Oslo, Norway 13th October 2006]

The objective of FEZANA's participation at the United Nations as a Non-Governmental Organization [NGO] in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council is to promote world peace. The first ever seminar on behalf of the North American Zoroastrian community presented at the 48th Session of Commission on the Status of Women [CSW] in February-March 2004,was entitled "Microfinancing-a step to the Upliftment of Women" . This participation by FEZANA at the United Nations was prescient of the Nobel Peace Prize awarded in 2006. Kudos to the Zarathushtis who presented the seminar on a topic which served as a prelude to the Year of Microfinance in 2005 and has now been recognized in a very visible way. There is value to such participation which molds our thinking, and we are privileged to provide similar opportunities for our community, on an on-going basis.

The CSW will be holding its 51st Session from 26 February to 9 March 2007 at the United Nations in New York City. This meeting is focused on "The elimination of all forms of discrimination and violence against the girl child." The Working Group on Girls of the NGO Committee on UNICEF has requested our help to ensure maximum participation of girls in the CSW, by including girls on our organization's delegation for 2007. Please be aware that it is a UN regulation that girls under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

The FEZANA UN-NGO Committee has an option to present a workshop on the related subject and would like to encourage Zoroastrians to participate actively as we have done in years past. It is not a requirement to be present for all 12 days. Individuals wishing to participate should communicate their intentions to the undersigned, no later than November 25, 2006 by e-mail and indicate convenient date(s) for attendance. Please include the name of the accompanying adult for minors planning to travel to New York. As this requires obtaining permission from the United Nations, your cooperation is requested to meet the UN deadline for registration.

Thank you,
